The President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council and Army Commander, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, arrived today, Wednesday, in the city of Juba in the Republic of South Sudan, on an official visit.
South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit received Al-Burhan at Juba International Airport, before the two parties held discussions on ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Council President is accompanied during the visit by the Minister of Energy and Oil, Dr. Mohieddin Naeem, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin, and the Director General of the General Intelligence Service, Lieutenant General Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal.
Last September, South Sudan announced Al-Burhan’s approval of an initiative by Salva Kiir to mediate a solution to the conflict in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
Al-Burhan then held joint discussions with Salva Kiir, which dealt with the situation in Sudan and the renewed peace agreements in South Sudan, in addition to arrangements for resuming oil exports through Sudanese ports.
Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been fighting a war that has left more than 20,000 dead and more than 14 million displaced and refugees, according to estimates by the United Nations and local authorities.
UN and international calls are mounting to end the war in order to spare Sudan a humanitarian catastrophe that has begun to push millions into famine and death due to food shortages due to the fighting that has spread to 13 out of 18 states.
