US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States will continue to support Israel in defending itself, as he put it, but in return he hopes that Israel and Iran will reach a ceasefire agreement.
In an interview with reporters, Trump added, while heading to the Group of Seven summit in Canada, that sometimes countries must fight a battle before reaching an agreement.
The US President also refused – according to Reuters – to reveal whether he had asked Israel to stop strikes against Iran.
In other statements to ABC, Trump said that the United States may intervene to support Israel in eliminating the Iranian nuclear program.
He added that his country is not involved in the confrontation at the present time, noting that there is no deadline for Iran in order to sit at the negotiating table with the United States.
He stressed that he was “open” that Russian President Vladimir Putin played the mediator to end this conflict, and said, “He is ready. He called me about it. And we made a long conversation.”
Earlier, the US President said that there are many contacts and meetings that are being taken to stop the escalation, stressing that “Iran and Israel have to reach an agreement, and we will reach peace between them soon.”
Since his return to the White House for a second presidential term, Trump has repeatedly threatened Iran to eliminate its nuclear program unless an agreement is concluded with the United States.
But the sixth round of indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran, which was scheduled to be held on Sunday in the Sultanate of Oman, was canceled after Israel launched, on Friday, unprecedented attacks on Iran targeting nuclear facilities, military and civilian sites and residential neighborhoods, and killed dozens, including senior military leaders and nuclear scientists.
Tehran emphasizes that the United States is the partner of Israel in these attacks, which Washington denies, but American and Israeli reports stated that there is an Israeli -Israeli coordination, and that American military capabilities support Tel Aviv in the air defense to intercept Iranian missiles.
