The US Supreme Court – Monday – granted President Donald Trump the green light to resume the dismantling of the Ministry of Education, as Trump objects to the federal intervention in the educational system that each state is run separately.
The court, which is dominated by the conservatives, ended the suspension ordered by a federal judge for the mass demobilization operations of the ministry.
The three liberal judges in the court of 9 members expressed their opposition to the decision.
During his election campaign, Trump pledged to cancel the Ministry of Education, which was established under a law issued by Congress in 1979, and moved last March to reduce the number of its employees by about half.
Powers of the states
“We will simply restore education to the states where he belongs,” Trump said earlier. This will keep school policies in the hands of states and local councils almost completely.
Trump issued instructions to the Minister of Education, Linda McMahon, to “start canceling the ministry permanently”, a project that the American right has been waiting and praised, but it requires the approval of Congress.

The Supreme Court canceled the decision of Judge John without any explanation, in a decision issued just days after another ruling that paved the way for Trump to carry out mass expulsion for employees in other federal departments.
“Congress alone has the authority to cancel the ministry,” said liberal judge at the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomoor.
“The majority is either deliberately ignoring the repercussions of its decision, or it is naive, but in both cases, the threat facing the separation of the authorities in our constitution is dangerous,” Sotomoor added.
Federal and education
Traditionally, the federal government played a limited role in education in the United States, as only about 13% of primary and secondary school financing came from the federal government treasures while the rest is funded by state budgets and other local authorities.
But federal funding is very important for low -income schools and students with special needs. The federal government had a fundamental role in enforcing the protection of civil rights for students.
After returning to the White House last January, Trump directed federal agencies to prepare comprehensive plans to reduce the workforce, as part of broader efforts made by the “government efficiency management” (Doug) to reduce the size of the federal departments.
Trump moved to expel tens of thousands of federal employees and reduce several governmental programs, targeting, especially diversity initiatives, and the cancellation of the Ministry of Education and the US Humanitarian Agency (US ID).
Why cancel the ministry?
The US Department of Education is one of the latest ministries in the US federal government, as it was officially established in 1979 during the era of former President Jimmy Carter, based on a democratic conviction that the educational system needs a central administration that supervises the achievement of educational justice and enhancing equality between the states.
The establishment of the ministry faced severe opposition from the conservative current at the time, in which he saw excessive and unnecessary intervention in the powers of the states.
Since its inception, the ministry has become responsible for the Department of Federal Educational Policies, the distribution of financial aid, the collection of data on the performance of national education, and the guarantee of equal educational opportunities.
With the direction to cancel the ministry, calls are increasing to entirely local educational models, and this may lead to flagrant dispers of the quality of education, Trump critics say.
