Reuters had previously quoted 5 informed sources as saying that Israel and Syria are in direct contact and conducted in the past few weeks faces faced to face with the aim of calming tension and preventing conflict from the outbreak of the border area between the two sides.
The sources reported that the communications are underway, led by the senior security official, Ahmed Al -Dalati, who was appointed after the overthrow of the lion as the governor of Quneitra, adjacent to the Golan Heights occupied by Israel.
Earlier this week, Al -Dalati was appointed Commander of the Internal Security in the Sweida Governorate in the south, where the Druze minority is concentrated in Syria.
It was not possible for Reuters to know which participants from the Israeli side, but two sources said they were security officials.
3 sources stated that several rounds of direct meetings took place in the border area, including the land controlled lands.
More understanding
Reuters added that although direct talks are currently focusing on joint security, such as preventing conflict and reducing Israeli incursions into the Syrian border villages, two sources said they may help pave the way for broader political understandings.
Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara said earlier this month that there are indirect talks with Israel aimed at calming tension, an explicit declaration that followed a report to Reuters that the UAE was mediating in such talks.
Commenting on this, the researcher specialized in the Syrian issue, Wael Alwan, said that there are many files at the negotiating table between the new Syrian government and Israel, whether through indirect negotiations, according to what the Syrian government confirms, or perhaps later with the transfer of matters to direct negotiations.
Israel has occupied the Syrian Golan Heights since the 1967 war and seized more lands in the wake of the overthrow of Assad last December, noting its concerns about the extreme past of the new rulers in Syria.
Israel also carried out an air strike that destroyed a large part of Syria’s military infrastructure, while at the same time it was pressing Washington to keep Syria weak and unstable. But the bombing and criticism have diminished their limit in the past few weeks.
On May 14, a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Sharia in Riyadh led a fundamental change in US policy towards Syria, giving the right -wing Israeli government a signal to work to reach understandings with Sharia.
A regional intelligence source described Trump’s communication with Sharia as a pivotal part of the reorganization of American policy, which confused the Israeli strategy of exploiting chaos in Syria after the fall of Assad.
