Today, Friday, the Peruvian Parliament impeached the country’s president, Dina Boluarte, who refused to appear before Congress (the Senate) during a hearing, noting that the country has known 6 presidents in nearly 9 years.
During a session whose proceedings were broadcast live on television, Parliament agreed by a majority to consider the five impeachment memos submitted by the main political forces against Bolwarti (63 years old), in which it was stated that she suffers from a “persistent moral inability” to carry out her duties.
A large majority of parliamentarians voted to remove Boluarte from the presidency, with 118 members out of 122 supporting the removal procedure, before Parliament Speaker Jose Khairy announced at the end of a very short session, “I approve the removal of the president.”
Bolwarti had previously survived several attempts to remove her, but this time the right-wing and far-right parties that were supporting her abandoned her.
Advance elections
The president of the unicameral parliament, which is dominated by the right and far-right, is expected to take power temporarily until general elections are held in April 2026.
Peru has been going through the worst period of political turmoil in its modern history for years, as the country has known 6 presidents in nearly 9 years.
After coming to power following the dismissal of President Pedro Castillo following protests that were violently suppressed by the authorities and left at least 50 dead, Boluarte suffers from an unprecedented decline in her popularity.
In recent weeks, anti-government demonstrations have intensified in Lima in protest against a wave of extortion and murders attributed to organized crime.
