Abu Muhammad al-Julani, former commander of Jabhat a-Nusra associated with al-Qaeda (and for a period with ISIS), made an amazing image change. The man who was associated with the world’s murderous organizations appears today in a suit and tie, makes moderate messages, and presents himself as a legitimate political leader.
When El-Julani was required to explain his terrorist past, he claims that “it was long ago,” that “reality has changed,” and most importantly-that he “was a child.” The West, with its usual diplomatic reflexes, rushes to give it legitimacy. After all, if a terrorist says he has changed – who will they suspect?
