Onion: Onion has become an international sensation this time. While onion prices have fallen drastically in India, onion prices are skyrocketing in many countries. In the neighboring country Pakistan itself, onion is being sold not at Rs 40-50 per kg but at more than Rs 250 per kg. People who eat onion are happy in the country as it is cheap but the farmers who grow it have tears in their eyes. Recently, the news of a farmer (Onion Farmer) getting Rs 2 after selling 512 kg of onion in Maharashtra is also surprising. Onion prices in the retail market are also very low this time. Although farmers are sad due to falling onion prices, there is good news for onion consumers and customers that after Holi, onion can become even cheaper and you can buy several kilograms of onion for Rs 10 in the retail market. .
According to the commission agents of Delhi’s Azadpur Mandi, this time the arrival of onion is very high. Onion crop has been very good this time. In Azadpur Mandi alone, 50 to 60 trucks of onion are coming daily. 1500 tonnes of onion is coming in these trucks. Which is being consumed in the surrounding areas. Onion is cheap this time but after March 15, onion may become much cheaper.
Rajendra, onion dealer in Azadpur mandi, says that this time red onion of Kharif crop is coming in abundance in Azadpur mandi of Delhi. Onions coming from different regions have different prices. Onions coming from the nearest Rajasthan are being sold at the rate of Rs 4-6 per kg. Whereas onion coming from Nashik, MP, Gujarat of Maharashtra is being sold at Rs 8-12 per kg. The most expensive onion at present is from Pune. Which is going in bulk for Rs 15 per kg.
Akhil Gupta, onion dealer in Azadpur market, says that onion is already cheap this time, farmers are facing loss due to this. However, after Holi, after March 15, new onion from Rabi crop is also going to arrive, whose quality is very good and it does not spoil quickly. In such a situation, firstly, new onion will come in the market, on top of that, due to its arrival, the stock of red onion currently being sold will be removed rapidly, hence the prices of onion will come down.
What comes after Holi is Garba onion, which is stored. Garba onion is the best, it does not spoil quickly. This is why it continues for many months. It is used from March to September-October. However, even during the rains, one onion is produced but it spoils quickly.
Agents Akhil and Rajendra say that farmers are not getting the right price for onions. Due to high arrival of onion and low price, customers are benefiting but farmers are incurring losses. The country’s onion production is high but export to Bangladesh etc. has been stopped since February 15, which has also been affected. Onion consumption is low in the country. At the same time, the upcoming new onion production is also expected to be bumper. In such a situation, onion will remain cheap in the coming months.
