In St. Petersburg in the historical building of the State Conservatory. N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, the first higher musical educational institution in the country, restoration work was completed. The implementation of the project began in 2015, but was delayed, and in 2021 it was transferred to the PPK “Single Customer in the Construction Industry”. As of today, work on the building has been completed. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

“We have completed the reconstruction of the historical building of the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg. It was a very large and complex job, which was completed a year ahead of schedule. In recent months, more than 1 thousand specialists have worked here. Now we have received a conclusion on compliance. During the restoration, the building was returned to its historical light beige color – now it looks again as it did when it opened at the end of the 19th century. By installing translucent domes made of glass and aluminum in the courtyards, it was possible to increase the usable area of the building to almost 32 thousand square meters. m,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Returning the historical appearance of the building was one of the key tasks of the reconstruction. The work was entrusted to experienced builders and restorers.

All elements, including stucco molding, painting, tiles, decoration, facades, doors, windows, were brought into compliance with the initially laid down solutions.

“The Conservatory in St. Petersburg is a landmark object being implemented within the framework of the comprehensive state program “Construction”, curated by the Ministry of Construction of Russia. In December of this year, the building completed the restoration of the organ body located in the Small Hall named after. Glazunov. Specialists managed to preserve elements of wooden acoustics from the late 19th century and restore the stucco decor,” noted Minister of Construction and Housing and Public Utilities Irek Fayzullin.

In addition, in the Small Hall named after. Glazunov specialists cleaned and restored numerous plaster decorations on the walls, wooden balconies, and paintings on the ceiling lamps by the famous artist Andrei Ryabushkin.

One of the most difficult locations was the House Church. At the end of the 19th century, artists Andrei Ryabushkin and Vasily Belyaev created paintings of the Conservatory temple based on the paintings of churches built in the 16th–17th centuries. After the October Revolution in the 1920s, these works of art, as a result of the reconstruction of the church, ended up under numerous layers of plaster and wallpaper.

“During the restoration process, the builders managed to strengthen the frame of the Great Hall named after. Rubinshtein with the help of metal structures weighing 1 thousand tons. Work on the installation of stage mechanization equipment, lighting and sound weighing more than 200 tons has been completely completed. The builders also changed the shape of the hall from rectangular to horseshoe-shaped to improve acoustics,” said Karen Oganesyan, general director of the Unified Customer PPK.

The result of a large-scale reconstruction of the Conservatory. N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov will be the emergence of one of the largest theater venues in Russia with variable acoustics technologies, where each of the 1,100 spectators at any point will be able to equally well hear the performance of electrically amplified music or classical music.

The long-awaited opening of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov is planned for 2025.
