Closing the Fourth Open International Astronomical Olympiad (Open World Astronomy Olympiad 2025)
In the federal territory of Sirius, the closing ceremony of the fourth open international astronomical Olympiad (Open World Astronomy Olympiad 2025) took place. The intellectual tournament was held from September 20 to 27, combining the teams of high school students from more than 15 countries. All six participants in the Russian national team won gold medals, repeating the success of all three years of participation. The winners were congratulated by the Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov.
“Recently, President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin called for everything to ensure that Russia remains among the leaders in the development and study of space. The bright victory of our schoolchildren at the International Astronomical Olympiad shows that we have the main thing to preserve such leadership – these are talented, enthusiastic guys. We are proud that once again all six members of the team won gold. I thank their parents, teachers and mentors for support and contribution to training. I wish our winners to maintain their lively interest in astronomy and find worthy application for abilities for the benefit of our country, ”said Deputy Prime Minister.
Gold medals were won by Ekaterina Churkina, Vladimir Zinin, Nikolai Gamynin, Olga Karaseva, Ivan Pollo, Margarita Tsvetkova. Ekaterina Churkina became the absolute winner of the Olympics.

Conducting competitions of such a high level in Russia is a significant event that emphasizes our commitment to the development of scientific cooperation. In the federal territory of Sirius “Talented Schoolchildren from different countries gathered. Astronomy is a significant science that not only reveals the secrets of the universe, but also forms a scientific worldview, teaches to think globally. I sincerely congratulate our national team with brilliant success – all Russian participants again won gold medals. I want to express special words of gratitude, I want to express to mentors and trainers, to the mentors, and the coaches. Whose labor, professionalism and faith in their students are the basis of these victories, ”said Sergey Kravtsov.
In total, in 2025, 18 participants from Russia, Belarus, Mongolia, Armenia, Peru, Egypt, Bangladesh and Venezuela won gold medals. Silver and bronze awards were awarded 16 schoolchildren.
Six people formed teams from schoolchildren to 18 years old. In a full-time format, students from 10 countries participated in the Olympics, and in the online mode they were joined by high school students from Venezuela, Bulgaria, Mongolia, Banglades and other states. The competition consisted of four rounds: observation, practical, theoretical and test. All tasks were performed in English.
Open International Astronomical Olympiad (Open World Astronomy Olympiad) is an international competition for high school students, focused on the participation of schoolchildren from the CIS, SCO, BRICS and other friendly states. The event is aimed at popularizing astronomical education, identifying talented students and strengthening international academic ties.
Recall that in 2024, 22 participants received gold medals: representatives of Russia, Bulgaria, Belarus, Armenia and Peru. Russian schoolchildren were awarded six gold medals. The absolute winner was the Russian Ekaterina Churkina.
