Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Saveliev took part in the panel discussion “International Transport Corridor“ North-South “” as part of the 16th International Economic Forum “Russia-Islamic World: Kazanforum 2025.” Marat Khusnullin, Minister of Transport Starova, Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov, the head of the government, also took part in the session. The Governor of the Astrakhan Region Igor Babushkin, representatives of the countries – partners of the project and the international business community.

By the Decree of the President of Russia of May 7, 2024 No. 309, the task was set to increase by 2030 the volume of transportation in MTK by at least one and a half times compared to the indicators of 2021 by increasing the global competitiveness of routes. The development of MTK North – South is aimed at solving this problem.

In November 2024, by Decree of the President Vitaly Savelyev was appointed special representative of the President for the Development of the North-South MTK, a special working group was also formed under the leadership of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Over the past three years, the Russian side has managed to significantly advance in the development of the infrastructure of the international transport corridor “North – South” and in the organization of transportation on its routes.

The deputy chairman of the government noted that intensive work continues in all sections of the corridor. This shows the interest of Russia and partner countries in the continuation of active cooperation on the development of the North-South MTK.

In particular, the practical implementation of the construction project for the RIT -Astara railway line in Iran is 162 km long. On the eve of May 15 of this year, in the Iranian province of Gilyan, a ceremony of transferring to the Iran of the first land plots to carry out engineering and survey work was held. The construction of the Ris-Astara line will provide continuous transit from Ust-Luga to Bender-Abbas and transportation of at least 15 million tons of cargo per year.

“Today, the North-South transport corridor“ gains strategic importance for trading with the countries of South Asia, Africa through the friendly states of the Transcaucasia, the Caspian region, Central Asia. When the corridor “North-South“ will earn full capacity, the path from the Ust-Luga to Bender-Abbas will decrease from 30–45 days to 15–20. The freight car over the last year amounted to more than 24 million tons, amounted to more than 24 million tons. We feel the obvious potential and prospects for its increase, ”said Vitaly Savelyev.
