India accused its neighbor Pakistan today, Monday, of “waving war” and “lack of responsibility” after receiving media reports of comments made by Pakistani army commander General Assem Mounir regarding nuclear threats in South Asia during his visit to the United States.
Indian media quoted sources that Mounir said, “We are a nuclear state. If we feel that we will fall, we will take half of the world with us.”
The army and the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not yet responded to a request to comment on Mounir’s statements. An excerpt from his speech, published by Pakistani security officials, did not include the “nuclear state” comments.
It was reported that Munir made these comments during an official dinner held by a Pakistani businessman in Florida last Saturday, where he spoke in front of a crowd consisting of more than 100 people and the comments could not be valid independently.
India and Pakistan are two nuclear armed men, and they fought their most violent battles in May, which erupted due to an attack on tourists in the control of India’s control of Kashmir, in which 26 civilians were killed.
“The nuclear threats are Pakistan’s trade, the international community can reach its own conclusions about the inadequacy involved in such comments,” said Randir Jaiswal, a spokesman for the Indian Foreign Ministry. He also expressed his regret that these comments were issued when he was in a third friend.
Munir was on a visit to the United States to attend the retirement ceremony of General Michael Corella, the fifteenth commander of the US Central Command. Munir held talks with the President of the Joint American Chief of Staff, General John Daniel Kane, which dealt with “mutual professional interest”, according to Bloomberg News Agency.
Munir’s visit came in less than two months after US President Donald Trump hosted him at a private lunch in the White House.
Relations between the United States and Pakistan have witnessed a improvement after tensions over recent decades. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif praised Trump for his mediating with a ceasefire with India after a short conflict in May, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused to recognize the role of the US President.
