In the Al -Lahamin market, one of the markets of the old town in Jerusalem, the lens of Al -Jazeera Net monitored an unprecedented deterioration that led to the closure of most of its stores under the severe economic conditions in addition to the restrictions of the Israeli occupation authorities.
Jerusalem merchant Moufid Shweiki told Al -Jazeera Net that his shop remained open since before the 1967 war, and is still steadfast in it despite the deterioration of the commercial movement, and he confirmed his insistence on the survival of the shop open to preserve the Palestinian presence in the place, and to perform the prayer in the Al -Aqsa Mosque.
As for the seventy Abu Mahmoud Badran, he expressed his deep sorrow for the situation that the market reached, saying: “Decades of decades ago, the Al -Lahamin market was filled with merchants and shoppers, but today it is almost empty.”
Badran pointed to the obstacles faced by Jerusalem merchants, foremost of which is the Arnuna tax (roofs) and exorbitant violations, in addition to the occupation police measures that prevent buyers from reaching the market smoothly and shopping from it, and called for the need to support market traders and enhance the steadfastness of those who remain the rest of them.
The Al -Lahamin market includes 100 commercial stores that specialized in selling meat, but the features of the market began to change gradually and the stores are no longer specialized in meat, and most traders were forced to close their stores under the weight of Cairo economic conditions.
