Hedi Ben-Omar: Hagia Sophia Israel time

The responses to my story a week ago, “Encounters of the Stupid Kind”, reminded me of things I once wrote about the search for intelligent life outside the Earth in the face of the human stupidity prevalent among life on the planet.

“Aya Sophia” is a large, ancient and important mosque in the heart of the city of Istanbul. It was established in the third century AD as a church by Emperor Constantine, the emperor who accepted Christianity and ruled it over the Roman Empire. It was destroyed and rebuilt by Theodosius in the fourth century AD, destroyed again and rebuilt in its present impressive form in the sixth century AD by the emperor Justinian. In the 15th century, the city, then called Constantinople, was conquered by the Muslim Ottomans led by Sultan Mehmet II – and the church was converted into a mosque.
