Flick dreams of repeating the achievement of 6 previous Barcelona coaches sports

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is seeking to repeat an achievement achieved by a number of former coaches of the Catalan club, which is to win the Spanish League title for the second season in a row.

Flick (60 years old) took over as coach of Barcelona in the summer of 2024, succeeding the Spaniard Xavi Hernandez, and in his first season (2024/2025) he succeeded in leading the team to win 3 local titles, led by La Liga, an achievement that only 9 coaches have achieved in the history of the “Blaugrana”, according to the Spanish newspaper “Sport”.

She pointed out that Flick is currently planning to maintain the La Liga title, like 75% of the Barcelona coaches who preceded him in this position, who won the title in their first season and repeated the same thing in the following season, led by Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique, the current coaches of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively.

The newspaper said, “Last season, Flick joined the elite coaches in Barcelona who won the league in their first season,” adding that “the positive statistic for him is that only two of the 8 coaches who preceded him failed to repeat the success in the following season, namely Josep Samitier and Terry Venables.”

6 coaches who succeeded in leading Barcelona to win the La Liga title in their first two seasons before Flick:

  1. Enrique Fernandez in the 1948/1947 and 1949/1948 seasons
  2. Helenio Herrera in the 1958/1959 and 1960/1959 seasons.
  3. Louis van Gaal in the 1998/1997 and 1999/1998 seasons.
  4. Pep Guardiola in the 2009/2008, 2010/2009 and 2011/2010 seasons.
  5. Luis Enrique in the 2014/2015 and 2015/16 seasons.
  6. Ernesto Valverde in the 2017/2018 and 2018/19 seasons.

The only coach who extended this series to 3 consecutive titles was Guardiola, and this will be the next challenge for Flick if he is able to maintain the La Liga title in the current season 2025/2026.

Barcelona loses the lead in La Liga

Barcelona lost the top spot in La Liga in the last round after its harsh loss to its host Sevilla, with a score of 1-4, before the current international break.

Following this defeat, the defending champion fell to second place in the standings with 19 points, two points behind leaders Real Madrid after the end of the eighth round of La Liga.

The newspaper concluded, “After Flick lost the top spot in the league to Seville, he can rest assured that history is on his side, and all indications say that he has all the capabilities to maintain the title.”
