“El Bayes”: The wave of recognition of Palestine and the threat to include the West Bank increases the isolation of Israel policy

The Spanish newspaper “El Bayes” said that the recognition of a number of Western countries in the State of Palestine on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings increases the scale of pressure on Israel, and reveals the size of the isolation it faces internationally.

The newspaper stressed in the report – which was prepared by the editor of global affairs Maria Vaijo – that the threat to the inclusion of the West Bank exacerbates the situation and undermines the two -state solution, which receives widespread global support.

The writer indicated that the United States has not yet commented on the move by a number of its most prominent allies, which is Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and France, to recognize Palestine as a state, despite US President Donald Trump’s announcement in advance his rejection of such a trend.

The threat to include the West Bank

According to the author, an Israeli official position was not issued in this regard, pending the return of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – who is required before the International Criminal Court – from Washington.

Netanyahu had previously announced that this recognition was “widespread support for Hamas”, while National Security Minister Etamar bin Ghafir gave the possibility of declaring sovereignty on the West Bank.

This step means – according to the writer – as an actually guarantee of lands occupied by Israel in 1967, which may cause the discontent of major countries involved in the troubled negotiations to end the Gaza war that has been going on for nearly two years, and Paris and London have warned of the consequences of this trend.

An Israeli warning to France

The writer quoted British Secretary of State Evit Cooper to warn her of the consequences of carrying out any retaliatory measures against the backdrop of London’s recognition of the State of Palestine, in reference to Ben Ghafir’s threat to include the West Bank.

French Foreign Minister John Noel Barrow also stressed that Paris will respond “with the utmost firmness” to any possible repercussions.

The writer quoted Israeli officials as saying that Tel Aviv may take action against Paris, while no similar steps against Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, countries linked with Washington, have not been referred to as a global spy network known as the “Five Eyes” coalition.

Historical context

The writer pointed out that the two -state solution formed the cornerstone of the peace process sponsored by the United States since the signing of the Oslo agreements in 1993, which gave its engineers the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, former Israeli Prime Minister Isaac Rabin, and his foreign minister Shimon Perez the Nobel Peace Prize in the following year.

However, this initiative soon faced dangerous setbacks on both sides, until it actually became in the ruling of the collapsing, according to the writer.

The report added that the “deal of the century”, which was supervised by US President Donald Trump during his first presidential term, and ended with the signing of Abraham’s agreements between Israel and a number of Arab countries, contributed to its role in undermining the two -state solution.
