Syria is known as the “beating heart of the Arab world”, hence the special significance of the developments there. When Syria belonged to the pan-Arab nationalist left, all the pan-Arab leftist movements flourished – such as the PLO, the Popular Front, the Democratic Front and the like.
When the rule of the Ba’ath weakened – these movements too, throughout the Levant, faded in favor of political Islam. As we have seen in Israel – the Balad movement, which in the heyday of the nationalist left used to set the tone for the Arab public in Israel, today does not pass the threshold.
