Dr. Hagai Olsnitsky: It is not domicide, but it may turn into ethnic cleansing in its own right



The world of medicine has managed to change the nature of AIDS, which was seen as a death sentence, to one that can be managed like any other chronic disease. No less significant is the change in consciousness – the fears, stigmas and social isolation have given way to awareness, empathy and the ability to accept the disease as part of modern life.

In these days when we celebrate World AIDS Day, which is this month, I remember very well the feelings of paralyzing fear that the AIDS virus evoked during the 1980s. As a disease considered to have the worst public relations in the world – people feared infection, rumors and myths were celebrated and stigmas against specific populations worked overtime.
