Chadian exhibitions sue Deby in France after his nationality was dropped news

The Chadian exhibitions residing in France, McKela Nagulela, announced that he had filed a complaint with the French judiciary against President Mohamed Idris Deby and a number of senior officials in Najamina, after the issuance of a presidential decree that shot down the Chadian citizenship.

Nagulela said, in a statement on Saturday, September 20, that he resorted to the Public Prosecution in Paris, accusing the Chadian authorities of “abuse of power” and “violating basic rights”, stressing that the complaint is based on the principle of global judicial jurisdiction in France.

Controversial

On September 17, the Chadian President issued a decree to drop citizenship from Naguella and the opposition activist Shafdin Ghalami Saleh, the founder of the “One Chad” blog, which has a wide follow -up among the Chadian community abroad.

The decree accused the opponents of “hostility to the regime” and “intelligence with foreign forces”, accusations that the concerned and describe them as an attempt to silence critical voices.

Nguela considered the decision a violation of the United Nations Convention on the reduction of cases of insecurity, which Chad ratified, stressing that dropping citizenship from opponents in exile is a “punitive political step”.

A long path of opposition

McCayla Nagulea is one of the most prominent faces of the Chadian opposition since the beginning of the millennium, as it strongly criticized the rule of the late President Idriss Deby Inno before leaving to France.

After Muhammad Idris Deby took power in the framework of the transitional period in 2021, Naguella joined a short period of loyalty, but he soon returned to the ranks of opponents to settle again in France.

As for Gallami Saleh, who was included in the decision to drop citizenship, he continues his media activity through his blog, criticizing what he describes as “the deterioration of freedoms” in his country.

A tense political context

Muhammad Idris Deby took power in April 2021 after his father was killed on the fighting front, then he won the May 2024 elections that were boycotted by opposition powers and described them as “fair”.

The issue of dropping citizenship comes in light of the escalation of restrictions on opponents, especially among the Chadian communities abroad, which reflects, according to observers, a growing trend towards narrowing the space of political expression.
