On Wednesday, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry summoned the American Chargé d’Affairs to protest the support announced by the embassy of former Brazilian President Gayer Bolsonaro, who is being tried for carrying out a coup attempt.
The Foreign Ministry told the French Press Agency that the American diplomat Gabriel Escobar was called in order to provide interpretations, after a statement issued by the embassy yesterday, Wednesday, and repeated the support announced by US President Donald Trump to Polsonaro.
Trump announced yesterday, Wednesday, that he would impose additional customs duties by 50% on Brazilian imports, starting from the first of August, due to the judicial prosecutions that the former Brazilian President considered it “a chase campaign”.
In a letter he sent to his Brazilian counterpart, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, Trump said that “the way Brazil dealt with former President Bolsonaro is a global stigma,” stressing that “it must immediately end the chasing campaign.”
The US embassy statement reiterated President Trump’s statement, saying that “political persecution against (Polsonaro) and his family and supporters are a shameful matter and affects democratic traditions in Brazil.”
The Brazilian prosecution accuses the former president of “criminal organization leadership” that conspired to keep him in power, whatever the result of the presidential elections in October 2022, which Da Silva won.
Bolsonaro faces a prison sentence of up to 40 years if convicted. He is likely to end his trial before the Supreme Court in the coming months.
Trump also threatened last Monday to impose additional customs duties on “any country that joins the anti -American BRICS policies (Group), knowing that Brazil is currently taking over the group.
