Belgian Foreign Minister Maxim Brevo announced today, Tuesday, that his country will recognize the State of Palestine in New York this month, and will impose “strict sanctions” on Israel.
“Belgium will recognize the State of Palestine during the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly, and there are strict sanctions on the Israeli government,” he wrote in a post on the X platform.
At the end of last July, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country will recognize the State of Palestine during the General Assembly meetings that will be held from 9 to 23 September, and after that more than 12 Western countries announced that it would follow the example of France, most notably Australia, Britain and Canada.
Other countries have signed what was called the “New York Declaration”, which are Andara, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia and Spain.

Human tragedy
Pervo said that Belgium will join the signers, which paves the way for a two -state solution.
He added that this decision comes “in light of the human tragedy that is revealed in Palestine, especially in Gaza, and in response to Israel’s violation of international law.”
He stressed that Belgium will also impose 12 “strict” punishment on Israel, such as the ban on importing from its settlements, and the review of public purchasing policies with Israeli companies.
The highest United Nations court ruled last year that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories – including the occupied West Bank and its settlements – is illegal, and it must be withdrawn as soon as possible.
