Australia has announced – today, Sunday, significant investments to update the infrastructure of its fleet of offensive nuclear submarines that it will obtain within the framework of the Okos agreement that it concluded with the United States and Britain in 2021 to confront China’s influence.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said that his country would spend $ 12 billion in Australian dollars (8 billion US dollars) to update and equip the facilities of ships, in order to be able to absorb its future fleet of nuclear energy submarines.
Marles added that this investment – which he described as great – will spend within 10 years in a shipbuilding and maintenance center in Perth in western Australia.
He continued that the government plans to equip the Henderson Center with dry, high -safety ponds for submarine maintenance, in addition to facilities for manufacturing landing ships and Japanese “Maghami” capacities.
The Australian Minister of Defense indicated that the total cost of the development of Henderson Defense Center may eventually reach about $ 25 billion.
The infrastructure at Henderson Center for American Nuclear submarines will allow the use of these facilities under the Okos Agreement.
The Australian government has started allocating money to Henderson’s Defense Center in Perth since the signing of the Okos agreement, which includes a deal to buy a fleet of nuclear power submarines.
Australia – which lacks the infrastructure needed to serve this type of submarine – intends to purchase 3 Virginia nuclear submarines in 15 years, with a plan to create an infrastructure to manufacture its own submarines in the future.
Almost two years after the signing of the Okos Convention, the stages of this deal that will extend until 2050 and the first target of which will be China, because these submarines that Australia will get, will be its mission alongside American and British submarines, monitoring the Pacific Ocean and limiting China’s attempts to extend its influence in that region.
China said at the time that the Australian -American -American submarine deal violates the Non -Proliferation Treaty.
