Analysts spoke to the “Path of Events” program agreed that the relationship between Syria and Russia will not be the same during the era of the ousted Syrian President Bashar al -Assad, but they suggested that this relationship will continue within the balances that the new leadership in Syria wants in its relations with the countries of the world.
The analysts’ talk came in their comment on the first visit by a Russian official delegation to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime. The delegation included a number of officials led by Mikhail Bogdanov, Deputy Foreign Minister, and Alexander Lavrentiv, the envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Syria, and officials from ministries, including the economic sector.
The writer and political researcher Dr. Moayad Ghazlan Kablawi stressed that the relationship between Syria and Russia must be characterized by a strategic balance, with the need to review the economic agreements concluded by the ousted regime from Russia, and betrayed – as the spokesman – the Syrian economy said in favor of Russia, in addition to the need to open a file Human rights, and discuss the issue of compensation that Moscow must pay as a result of its support for Assad.
While asserting that Russia needs Syria more than Syria’s need for it, Kablawi saw that the new authority in Damascus had to keep a Muawiyah hair with Moscow, and try to benefit from international balances, so that it does not fully in the arms of the western camp.
As for the chief researcher at the Russian Council for International Affairs, Dr. Nikolai Sergov, he said that Russia is ready to start a dialogue with the new government in Syria, on economic relations and the future of Russian military bases, ruling out that his country takes upon itself – as he said – the actions of the ousted president.
He suggested the possibilities of the two countries reaching an agreement and understandings on various issues, in the event that there were no “irrational claims” by the Damascus government, denying that the Russian military in Syria would have targeted the Syrians, but rather those who called them the terrorists.
The Russian researcher ruled out that the new leadership in Syria resorted to entering a quarrel with Russia, “because it needs international recognition and maintaining stability,” stressing for his part the importance of this leadership to be balanced in its relations between the West, Russia and China.
Despite his acknowledgment that the relationship between the two countries will not be as it was during the era of the ousted Bashar al -Assad, but Sergov confirmed that his country is interested in establishing relations with Damascus, allowing it to preserve its military bases for two or 5 years, indicating that there will be Western pressures on Damascus in This field.
The Minister of Defense in the Syrian interim government was Mustaf Abu Qasra, about a week ago, that the new Syrian authorities are negotiating with Moscow regarding the continued presence of the Russian forces in the Hmeimim and Tartous bases located on the Mediterranean coast.
West conditions
On the other hand, the first researcher at the Al -Jazeera Center for Studies, Dr. meeting Makki, believes that the visit of the Russian delegation to Damascus comes in order to arrange the disintegration in the relationship between the two countries. It is likely that the new authority in Syria will choose to align the Western side and the Arab system in support of the West and end the close and strategic relationship that was with Russia .
Makki pointed out – in his talk to the “Path of Events” program – that the West will impose conditions on the new system in Damascus in order to decipher its association with Russia, but he said that the relationship between the two parties will remain in its diplomatic context.
He explained that the disengagement between Damascus and Moscow directly and quickly is not possible and will need a period of time, as well as arrangements and understandings, and in this context he asked about the extent of Russia’s ability to protect the new regime in Syria from external interference, especially Iran.
On the issue of Russian military bases, Makki believes that Moscow hopes that these rules will not be closed immediately and postponed the matter.
The Bloomberg Agency quoted earlier who described it as the informed source, that Moscow is seeking strongly to retain its two military bases in Syria, in reference to the rules of Hmeimim and Tartous.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last month that he agreed with the description of the Commander -in -Chief of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed Al -Shara, the Syrian -Russian relations as “long -term and strategic”, noting that his country is counting on resuming cooperation with the new authorities.
