The Egyptian capital Cairo Criminal Court of Appeal ruled today, Wednesday, to uphold the death sentence by hanging for the second time against the accused, known in the media as the “Thug of the Assembly,” on charges of killing 3 women in horrific ways that shook the Egyptian street.
The accused, Karim Mohamed Selim, appeared in the dock wearing a red suit, accepting the sentence in complete silence, after the court in a previous session referred his papers to the Grand Mufti of Egypt to express a legal opinion regarding the implementation of the death sentence.
The Public Prosecution explained in an official statement that investigations found that the accused committed 3 confirmed murders, while his involvement in other crimes was not proven.
The case began when the Public Prosecution received a report on May 16 of last year that the body of an unidentified woman had been found on June 30 Road in Port Said Governorate. Investigations led to the accused, who confessed to horrific details about his crimes.
According to the prosecution’s statement, the accused identified the victims and took them to his residence in the Katameya area in Cairo, where he performed unusual acts with them under the influence of drugs, before killing them in cold blood and disposing of their bodies.
The prosecution added that the accused was photographing his victims using his phone, and forensic evidence was seized, including the two phones used to photograph the victims and the car in which he transported their bodies.
This case is considered one of the most heinous crimes that Egypt has witnessed in recent times.
