Controversy erupted in Syrian circles after the Syrian Consul in Dubai, Ziad Zahreddine, appeared in a video in which he announced his defection from the Syrian government. Zahreddine expressed his refusal to continue exercising his duties under the authority of the current government in Damascus, declaring his support for the demands of the demonstrators in Suwayda and his opposition to the way the authorities are dealing with the protests there.
Zahreddine described the current situation as a violation of the rights of the people of the Druze region, calling for an end to the violence in Suwayda.

For its part, the Consular Administration in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates responded to Zahreddine’s statements, confirming that the latter was serving as Consul General of the Syrian Arab Republic in Dubai, and that he was transferred to the Central Administration in Damascus pursuant to Resolution No. 209 dated 9/20/2025, and accordingly his duties at the Consulate ended as of the date of the resolution.
The Ministry added that the statements and positions he issued recently do not represent the Syrian state or its official policies, but rather reflect a personal position that is inconsistent with diplomatic norms and the ethics of consular work.

The news spread on social media platforms and the debate began, as tweeters wrote that the Syrian consul in Dubai appointed by the Assad regime announced that he would stop continuing his work with the current government and supporting the Hijri authority in Jabal al-Bashan, meaning Jabal al-Arab.
But some pointed out that Zahreddine was not at his job after the decision to terminate his services and requested his return to Syria, and that what he mentioned about the defection came after he was fired from his job, noting that he sent his family two months ago to seek refuge in Germany.

In turn, others commented that Ziad Zahreddine remained silent for years in the face of the crimes of the Assad regime, the same regime that supported drug and weapons gangs in Suwayda and provided them with cover and funding, while imposing a stifling siege on the people of Jabal al-Arab.
They stressed that he was never a voice of objection or a witness to the truth, but rather he was part of a system that remained silent when Suwayda was suffocating, and that his release today with a “show” video to announce his defection from the Damascus government and his use of the term “Mount al-Bashan” instead of Jabal al-Arab show that what he did was in his personal interest, not the public interest.

Some observers pointed out that after the decision to transfer him to Damascus was issued on September 20, Ziad Zahreddine announced his defection, citing the events in Suwayda, which he did not support 3 months ago, and that he used these events as an excuse to justify his request for political asylum, and pledged allegiance to the Hijri “Ambassador of Bashan.”
On the other hand, supporters of Consul Zahreddine’s move expressed their support for him, stressing that there are situations in which a person is required to make strict decisions and not submit to authority.
