US President Donald Trump revealed on Thursday that the United States is trying to regain control of the Baghram air base in Afghanistan.
The president’s comments came during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Sir Kerr Starmer, as Trump criticized the United States with the withdrawal of Afghanistan under the management of President Joe Biden in 2021.
The President said that the United States would have left Afghanistan, but would retain the Baghram base.
“We gave them the base for free,” Trump said. “By the way, we are trying to restore it.”
He added: “We are trying to restore it because they need things from us. We want to restore that rule.”
The president has not provided any details on how the United States dealt with any kind of agreements or with exactly. The Taliban did not mention the name, although they are now controlling Afghanistan.
However, Trump pointed out that one of America’s desire to restore the base is “it is only one hour away from the place where China makes its nuclear weapons.”
The White House did not respond immediately to the request to comment from The Daily Beast.
The Bagram base was previously the largest American military base in Afghanistan, and it fell in the hands of the Taliban during the withdrawal of the United States under the administration of Biden in August 2021 after about 20 years of American presence.
Trump often attacked his predecessor Biden as the withdrawal management. The withdrawal from Afghanistan began under Trump’s management in 2020, but was completed in August 2021 under Biden’s management.
The Taliban said last week that they discussed the normalization of relations between Afghanistan and the United States during a meeting with US officials, according to the Associated Press.
The White House did not issue any official statement, but the Taliban said that its foreign minister, Amir Khan Muqti, met the American Special Envoy for hostage affairs Adam Bouhler, and during the meeting, the exchange of prisoners was discussed as part of efforts to normalize relations.
