The infiltration of the mafia puts Italy under the judicial custody sports

The Italian Public Prosecution – Tuesday – said that the rival Crotonian club in the third division of football was placed under the judicial custody for one year after the police found “adequate evidence” on the mafia penetration of the club on a large scale.

Crotone, who is based in the southern Kalabria region, which is a home to the strong Narranjetta mafia, is currently the seventh place in the third group in the Italian third division with 5 points from 4 games.

The team participated in the local first division in two consecutive seasons between 2016 and 2018 and again the 2020-2021 season.

Today’s decision means that the club will continue its sports activities, but under the supervision of certain administrators from the court. The club itself is not under investigation.

The club said in a statement, “Croton Football Club will actively and actively cooperate with judicial officials appointed by the court to continue its activities in a way that serves the club’s interests, fans and sports in general,” the club said in a statement.

Crotoni added that the court’s decision “does not indicate even from afar to the involvement or complicity of the club, its shareholders, or its directors and its collaborators.”

The Prosecutor’s Office in the city of Katranzaro said in a statement that the Croton Club “has been subjected to the past decade, directly or at least indirectly, due to intimidation and subjugation conditions by members of the local Ndrangita mafia.”

Prosecutors said that the local mafia in particular infiltrated the club’s security and tickets, and the judicial guard system is expected to help direct its economic activities towards the legal track again.

The infiltration of the mafia to Italian football, including the sale of tickets, is a well -known phenomenon, as recent investigations targeted fans in Inter Milan and Milan clubs.
