Arnon Khuri -Japin: The Hunger Report in Gaza – what he says, why, and what should we do

On August 22, in a dramatic announcement, the IPC declared a 5-level hunger in Gaza. What does a 5th grade of hunger mean? Is the classification justified? And maybe most importantly, what can Israel do? What should Israel do?

The IPC is an international classification method that includes five hunger levels. Level 1 is classified as a family that has access to more than 2,100 calories per day per day. When consumption is lower than this threshold, the families may be classified in levels 3 or 4, which are characterized by an unintentional diet and does not include all food fathers. In these situations, the families are forced to take extreme survival strategies, such as kibbutz alms or food search.
