Dr. Ofer Chen: Democracy in retreat – populism, polarization, and police coup

On January 4, 2023, Justice Minister Yariv Levin convened a press conference in which he declared the launch of the “Polish reform”. The program was presented as one designed to solve a unique Israeli crisis. In practice, however, this is a adoption of a pattern of action that occurred, in a similar way, in Poland and Hungary. This is found in an interview given by Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pavel Jablonsky, who revealed that the Netanyahu government consulted with officials in his government on the eve of the launch of the program.

Many books and articles have been written about the image of populist government, its trends and guests. However, Prof. Noam Gadron and Prof. Yaniv Rosnai, “Democracy in the Act: Popularity, Potovation and the Police Reverse,” is undoubtedly the finest of them.
