Russian proposal
In the same context, Wall Street Journal quoted European and Ukrainian officials as saying that this week, the Russian president had submitted to the Trump administration a comprehensive proposal for the ceasefire in Ukraine.
The proposal called Kiev to make major regional concessions, and to seek international recognition of Russia’s demands in exchange for stopping the fighting. The demands of Putin also included Kiev’s abdication of the Donbas region without Russia to abide by something that mentioned nothing to stop fighting.
The sources said that Putin informed the American envoy Steve Wittouf of his approval of a full ceasefire, if Ukraine agreed to withdraw its forces from the entire Donetsk region in the east of the country.
In a related context, Axios website quoted sources as saying that US officials, senior Ukrainians and European countries are planning to meet next week in Britain. The sources added that the meeting aims to try to reach joint positions before the Trump Putin meeting.
For his part, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he was confident that President Trump would withdraw if Putin insisted on a bad deal.
For his part, Ukrainian President Folodimir Zellinski said that Russia has so far ignored the deadline for a ceasefire against his country.
Zelinski pointed out – in a speech to him – that his country has received great international support in the recent period, but Moscow continues to launch its attacks on cities and villages in Ukraine.
