Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev took part in a meeting of deputy heads of government of the Caspian states. It discussed the main vectors of joint work to minimize the adverse consequences of the shallow of the Caspian Sea.
“The Caspian Sea has an important environmental and socio-economic importance for our countries. And of course, the Russian Federation is concerned about its condition. Currently, we are faced with an unprecedentedly active decrease in sea level. Different spheres of the economy, in particular agriculture, transport, mineral mining, and tourism, suffer from this. And the intensive release of land leads to soil degradation and desertification, ”said Dmitry Patrushev.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Russia has been conducting Caspian research for many years. Its shallowing is a large -scale challenge for all five coastal states: Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia, therefore, studying the causes of shallowing requires an integrated approach. Dmitry Patrushev emphasized the importance of predicting options for further development of events and developing measures to protect the ecology of the Caspian Sea and the adaptation of the economy to natural and climatic processes.
The deputy chairman of the government proposed to launch a multilateral mechanism of interaction, which will allow to develop general standards and approaches to studying the levels of the Caspian level. The Deputy Prime Minister said that the coordination committee on hydrometeorology of the Caspian Sea, within the framework of which the data is already conducted, may become a platform for joint activities.
“The Russian Federation is configured to constructive interaction with all the Caspian states. Our joint work should be carried out without any politicization: we are responsible to the current and future generations for preserving the Caspian Sea and the sustainable development of this region, ”said Deputy Prime Minister.
Dmitry Patrushev emphasized that Russia also hopes for the activation of a regional dialogue on the shallowing issues of the Caspian under the Tehran Convention.
