The existence of free and fair elections is a critical characteristic of democracy, with a perception among the public whereby the elections are not free and fair can lead to severe public trust in the political system, and even political violence.
Thus, both in January 2021 in the United States and in January 2023 in Brazil, hundreds and thousands of presidents who lost in the election (Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, respectively), stormed the rulers of government to make the election results. Many of them did this because of the belief that the elections were zipped.
