
The Russian team of the first open international geographical Olympiad (Opengeo 2025)
At the University Gymnasium of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov summed up the first open international geographical Olympiad (Opengeo 2025). The competition united 107 participants from 23 states. The Russian team was introduced by six winners of the final stage of the All -Russian Olympiad of schoolchildren 2024/25 of the school year in geography. In the team standings on the Opengeo 2025, they won first place: in the piggy bank of the Russian national team, there are four gold and two silver medals.
The children were congratulated by the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Education of Russia Sergey Kravtsov.
“Our President Vladimir Putin noted that geography serves as the basis for the formation of patriotic values, cultural, national identity and self -awareness. The vivid victory of our schoolchildren shows: adult outstanding minds of science have someone to rely on. Thanks to such victories, we see that our common work to perform the President’s task – to improve the quality of teaching of natural sciences in schools – gives fruits. Thanks to everyone who contributed to these high results, and we wish you success in the future! ” -said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He also added that the national project “Youth and Children” helps to create conditions for the realization of the potential and development of the talents of each person.
The head of the Ministry of Education of Russia Sergey Kravtsov congratulated the children and drew attention to the fact that the Olympiad helps to strengthen international educational ties.
“Today we pay special attention to the development of interest among students in the study of natural scientific disciplines. Participation in the open international geographical Olympiad is an opportunity for children to not only test their knowledge, but also get acquainted with young talents from different countries, exchange experience and ideas. I note that on the Russian site such a competition took place for the first time. Congratulations to our team, their parents and teachers with a brilliant result. I am sure that the success of our schoolchildren will inspire their peers to new discoveries and achievements, ”Sergey Kravtsov emphasized.

The coaches of the Russian team were leading specialists of the Geographical Department of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosova Pavel Kirillov and Dmitry Bogachev, as well as a teacher of the National Research University “Higher School of Economics” Arthur Petrosyan and the teacher of the ONAO “New School” Anna Romashina.
The Olympiad was attended by young geographers from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Afghanistan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Ghana, Zambia, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Filippin, Filippin, Filippin, Filippin Sri Lanka. The absolute winner of the Opengeo 2025 was recognized by Tadeus Trazo (Philippines). Russian schoolboy Christian Rymarchuk shared 2nd place with a participant from Belarus.
The participants performed all the tasks of the Olympiad in English. The competition program of the Olympiad consisted of three rounds. During the theoretical tour, the participants solved five problems in physical and socio-economic geography. A practical tour included tasks aimed at analyzing space pictures, graphic and cartographic tasks. As part of the multimediatest, schoolchildren answered 40 illustrated questions from various spheres of geographical knowledge.
The Scientific Committee and the Jury Opengeo 2025 included leading geographers from Russia (representatives of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences), India, Kazakhstan, Serbia and other countries.
Open International Geographical Olympiad (https://opengeo.msu.ru) is an international competition for high school students. Its organizers are the Ministry of Education of Russia and Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov.
The competition is carried out as an open alternative international Olympiad for schoolchildren and students selected according to the results of national geographical Olympiads and other intellectual competitions in the field of geography of the CIS, SCO, BRICS and other states. The event is aimed at popularizing geographical knowledge and skills among talented schoolchildren and strengthening international educational and academic ties.
