Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov spoke about the key indicators of domestic tourism for 2024. According to Rosstat, last year Russians and foreign guests made 79.2 million tourist trips in 11 months – from January to November.
“Over the 11 months of 2024, tourists made almost 80 million trips around the country, which shows a high interest in traveling around Russia. This is almost 11% more than in the same period in 2023. According to the forecast, at the end of last year the number of tourist trips will be about 92 million and will become a record in the entire history of statistical observations of this indicator (for 23 years). This growth brings us closer to achieving the goal set by Russian President Vladimir Putin: by 2030, to achieve a 5% share of tourism in the country’s GDP and 140 million tourist trips,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the flow of travelers from abroad is also increasing. The dynamics in the Far East are especially impressive. In the Khabarovsk Territory, the number of tourist trips by foreign guests increased by 204%, in the Amur Region – by 142%, and in Primorye – by 112%. A significant part of them are travelers from China.
In absolute terms, Moscow (11.1 million tourist trips), Krasnodar Territory (9.4 million) and St. Petersburg (5.8 million) traditionally lead. The top ten leading regions also include the Moscow region, Crimea, Tatarstan, Sverdlovsk region, Tyumen region, Rostov region, Stavropol region.
“In 2024, we note two important trends in the development of domestic tourism. Firstly, this is the growth of new tourist centers, especially in Siberia, where we are seeing an increase in the number of tourist trips by more than 16%. Secondly, this is a significant increase in interest in Russia from foreign tourists. We will continue to create attractive travel conditions so that as many people as possible can discover the beauty and diversity of our country,” emphasized Maxim Reshetnikov.
The leadership in the increase in the number of tourist trips among the federal districts at the end of the year was firmly established in Siberia (+16.4%), the Southern Federal District (+14.3%) and the North-West (+12.7%). Among the regions, the leadership in growth is held by the Republic of Tyva (+64.8%), the Chechen Republic (+58.8%), and the Ryazan region (+46.5%). Also, high rates are observed in the Rostov and Ulyanovsk regions, the Chuvash Republic, Smolensk, Omsk, Orenburg and Tomsk regions.
It is worth noting that the growing popularity of domestic tourism is also stimulating the development of ski resorts throughout the country. Now in Russia the winter season is in full swing. New slopes and ski lifts have opened in the Perm Territory, Samara Region, Tver Region and Khabarovsk Territory.
Also this year, the Mamison resort is expected to open in North Ossetia. In addition, the expansion and reconstruction of existing resorts is taking place. For example, as part of the preferential lending program, seven ski resorts are being modernized and two new ones will be built: “Three Volcanoes” in Kamchatka and “Paradise-Iz” in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
