Since October 7, the demand for the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the circumstances that led to the surprise attack and the events that occurred during and after it has been increasing. The government, for its part, has so far refused to establish a commission of inquiry. These days, the Prime Minister is promoting an unusual law, which establishes a mechanism of a political investigation committee and is intended to prohibit the establishment of a state investigation committee into the events of October 7.
The justification for establishing an investigative committee following a failure of the executive authority stems from the importance of learning and drawing lessons in order to reduce similar risks in the future. The investigative committee’s format is designed to enable a thorough and independent investigation, while maintaining public trust in the investigative body. Due to the important public role of a commission of inquiry in situations of national crisis, the public’s support for the establishment of the commission of inquiry and its trust in its structure are of central importance.
