Find out which of the latest 13F filers owns Amazon.com


At Holdings Channel, we reviewed the latest batch of the 20 most recent 13F filings for the reporting period 09/30/2024 and noticed that Amazon.com Inc (ticker: AMZN) was held by 14 of these funds. When hedge fund managers seem to share the same opinion, we think it’s wise to take a closer look.

Before continuing, it is important to point out that 13F filings do not tell the whole story, as these funds are only required to disclose their long positions within the SEC, but are not required to disclose their short positions. A fund making a bearish bet against a stock by selling short calls, for example, may also be long a certain amount of stock as it trades around its overall bearish position. This long component could show up in a 13F filing and everyone could assume the fund is bullish, but that only tells part of the story. because the bearish/short side of the position is not visible.

Having made this caveat, we believe that looking groups 13F filings can be revealing, especially when comparing one holding period to another. Below, let’s take a look at how AMZN positions have evolved, for this latest batch of 13F filers:

In terms of shares held, we count 4 of the above funds having increased their existing AMZN positions from 06/30/2024 to 09/30/2024, 8 having decreased their positions and 2 new positions.

Beyond these particular funds in this batch of most recent filers, we counted the number of AMZN shares overall among all funds that held AMZN as of 09/30/2024 (of the 7,313 we reviewed in total). We then compared this number to the total sum of AMZN shares held by these same funds as of 06/30/2024, to see how the total number of shares held by hedge funds has changed for AMZN. We found that between these two periods, the funds increased their holdings by a total of 544,086,379 shares, from 5,852,116,883 to 6,396,203,262, an increase in the number of shares of approximately 9.30 %.
